Around Easter Ross...
Portmahomack, described by millionaire philanthropist Andrew Carnegie as "The Venice of the North" has
relaxing walks along the shore to the east or west, and around the LIGHTHOUSE and offer plenty of opportunities for beachcombing
Portmahomack beach is gently shelving with no strong currents.
The lighthouse at TARBATNESS is the second highest on mainland Scotland. It was designed and built by Robert Stevenson and
completed in 1830. It was originally painted white, but in 1915 during the First World War, two red bands were added after
patrolling destroyers got confused the the opposite light at Lossiemouth!
Portmahomack is an ideal base for touring the highlands as we are 1 1/2 hours to the west coast and 1 1/2 hours to the north coast.
The capital of the highlands, Inverness is just 50 minutes south.
Travelling ten minutes northwards you will reach Tain, the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland, where King James II made many
pilgrimages. There you will find the 14th century collegiate chapel and our own museum called Tain Through Time.
Tain it is also home to the world famous Glenmorangie Distillery - a warm welcome awaits all their visitors with guided
tours daily and a wee dram at the finish!
Travelling just a little further north you come to Dornoch once famous for its beautiful Cathedral but now more famous
for Skibo Castle where Madonna got married! Dornoch also boasts one of the best golf courses in the area.
Further northward and we have Dunrobin Castle, family home to the Duke of Sutherland, the castle is well worth a visit.
Reaching Caithness and the Castle of Mey, home to the late Queen Mother is a must. Also there are trips across to Orkney on a daily basis.
If GOLF is of interest to you then we have a sneakily challenging nine-hole links course here in Portmahomack and plenty
of 18 hole courses in the area such as TAIN, GOLSPIE, BRORA, and off course the prestigious course in Dornoch.
